Quality of Life
Whether it is the traditional medicine of Vernon Memorial Hospital and Gunderson Lutheran Viroqua Clinic or the healing arts of over a dozen practitioners of holistic medicine, the people of Viroqua have a selection of choices when it comes to their wellbeing. The choices in healthcare are just one of the options that make Viroqua, Wisconsin one of the greatest small towns in the region.
Vernon Memorial Hospital
Established in 1951, this healthcare organization is prospering and expanding as its service area grows. Vernon Memorial Healthcare includes Vernon Memorial Hospital, a critical access hospital with 25 beds, and its five area clinics - Bland, Hirsch, La Farge, Kickapoo, and Outpatient. VMH, which is one of the few profitable rural hospitals in the U.S., has built a favorable reputation for its out-patient services and fine orthopedic medicine and has attracted general practitioners from larger cities who want a smaller, slower-paced practice. VMH has a full range of services from kidney dialysis to physical therapy to a 24-hour emergency department, an After Hours Clinic, comprehensive imaging services, cardio-pulmonary testing and rehabilitation, and much more.
Remodeling projects in the 1990ís have made Vernon Memorial Hospital better able to fulfill its mission to provide quality healthcare close to home. A Kidney Dialysis Unit opened with the help of Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center and After Hours Care began in 1999. The year 2000 saw the installation of state-of-the-art digital x-ray equipment, and 2001 brought the expansion of the H.E.A.R.T. Center adding more exercise equipment, racquetball courts and a new therapeutic pool to enhance the rehabilitation therapy services offered at the community fitness and health facility. The H.E.A.R.T. Center currently provides personal training, weight loss programs, aerobic exercise, weight machines, racquetball, or water exercise classes and many other classes.
New state-of-the-art surgery suites were opened early in 2004, and VMH is currently building a three story Medical Office Building, to be completed in the spring of 2006, on the north side of the hospital. This building will greatly enhance and consolidate medical services at VMH. The new building will house the Hirsch Clinic, the Gundersen Clinic, the Gundersen Vision Center and additional services.

Bethel Home & Services
Bethel Home and Services will be celebrating 50 years of service to the elderly in 2005. Even though the corporation was formed in 1946, the fundraising and building process took nine years before the first residents were admitted in November of 1955. Since that time, Bethel Home had building additions in 1962, 1968, and 1984. Between 1984 and 1991 this not-for-profit organization developed group homes, a day care center and 25 independent living duplexes.
In 1999 they added an assisted living development called Maplewood Terrace that includes 24 separate rental apartments with on-site medical assistance. Maplewood Terrace added 24 additional units this year and the Bethel Home is currently undergoing a complete renovation funded by the Caring in a New Generation Capital Appeal.
Bethel Home and Services is second only to the hospital in job opportunities for the local residents, each employing around 300 people. Bethel Home & Services offers 24 hr. professional nursing staff, rehabilitation services, Chaplaincy, and full activity program.
