Job Posting – Assistant Street Superintendent/Grader Operator, Street Department, Public Works

The City of Viroqua is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill a full-time position of Assistant Street Superintendent/Grader Operator for the Street Crew, Public Works Department.

This is a supervisory position that works closely with Street Superintendent to direct daily operations of the Street Department. This position will also be the lead grader and other heavy equipment operator. Key duties of this position include but are not limited to: planning and supervising the street crew daily operations, lead grader operator, heavy machinery operation, plowing and salting/sanding, forestry work, storm water infrastructure maintenance, brush and compost pick-up, general construction and street maintenance.  The employee will perform a variety of duties related to public works. Experience using Microsoft Office Suite for email, word documents and spreadsheet and working with Geographic Information System is an asset.

Qualifications include:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license and hold a class B Commercial Driver’s license or obtain one within one month of start
  • Experience running a motor grader for snow removal and road grading
  • Be capable of operating a skid loader, end loader, tractor and dump truck with related implements, chain saw and mower tractor for public works operations
  • Supervisor experience or training
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and GIS

This position involves heavy lifting, climbing and exposure to extreme elements. This is an on-call position that periodically requires working after hours, weekends and holidays. Snow removal season is November 1st to April 15th. The employee is expected to be on-call throughout this time. Additionally, there is a required 15-minute response time to emergency call-outs or snow removal. The candidate may perform duties under stressful conditions. This position will require participation in the Commercial Driver’s License drug and alcohol testing program.

This is a full-time non-union position. The City of Viroqua offers compensation starting at $21.00-$23.75, depending on experience, plus a fringe benefits package. After successful completion of the one-year probationary period, it is expected hourly compensation will increase.
