Mayor Welcome Message

Welcome to Viroqua, the County Seat of Vernon County!

Viroqua is nestled in the heart of the Driftless region, an un-glaciated region recognizable by the spectacular ridges, bluffs and valleys. Beautiful vistas and overlooks are around every curve in the road and the changing fall colors of the hillsides are an experience not to be missed. Our extraordinary landscapes lend themselves to all forms of outdoor recreation including: cycling, hiking, hunting, fishing, skiing, snowmobiling and camping.  The City parks also offer a great time outdoors with family friendly activities, annual events and the dragon in Eckhart Park is a local favorite with the kids.

Our 4,400 friendly residents value the community resources and amenities including our 24 hour police force and volunteer fire department as well as the abundant healthcare including the outstanding Vernon Memorial Hospital, alongside numerous holistic medical practitioners, chiropractors, acupuncturists, physical therapists, dentists, counselors and massage therapists.  Wellness classes for mind, body and soul are available year round as well as 24 hour access fitness centers.

Education is paramount in Viroqua and every year more individuals move to our community to attend our award-winning public schools, the Viroqua Area Montessori School, Pleasant Ridge Waldorf School, Youth Initiative High School or the Christian Cornerstone Academy. Western Technical College is also located in the heart of community with post-secondary classes and continued education courses for adults.

Viroqua holds a rich history in our land, buildings and downtown.  Our cemeteries, landmarks and memorials recognize important people, stories and moments in time. The Vernon County Museum, located downtown, highlights the county’s resources like the agricultural heritage of the round barns scattered throughout the countryside, the Native American influence on our community and the area’s involvement in the Civil War.

Entertainment can be found almost weekly with events that fill the calendar. Arts and culture are highlighted by the productions at the handsomely restored Temple Theatre, Underground Players and The Ark.  Artists abound in our community and their work can be seen at local restaurants, individual studios and local galleries. Events like the Vernon County Fair, Wild West Days, Driftless Music Festival, Harvest Parade and the weekly Saturday Viroqua Farmers Market are not to be missed.

The shopping and services in Viroqua are incomparable to many communities our size. From quaint shops in the historic downtown to the largest retailers in the Industrial Park on the north side of town; Viroqua has it all.

Agriculture and food are part of the fabric of our community. A historic farming community, Viroqua is at the center of a re-emergence of family farming. Meet your farmers directly at the Viroqua Farmers Market, purchase numerous local products at Viroqua’s grocery stores or enjoy an exquisite meal at one of our wonderful dining establishments.

Thanks for visiting our site and we hope to see you soon!
