Medication Drop Off Box

The Viroqua Police Department has a Prescription Drug Drop-Off Box available in the lobby of the Viroqua Police Department.  The lobby is open Monday through Friday 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM, except for holidays.  The Medication Drop Box is a safe place to dispose of medication that is no longer needed or expired. Anyone wishing to dispose of unused, unwanted, or expired prescription or over-the-counter drugs is welcome to use the Medication Drop Box during this time and can do so anonymously (no need to check in with administrative staff).

Unused or expired medicine should never be flushed or poured down the drain.  Removing potentially dangerous pharmaceutical substances from our State’s medicine cabinets help to prevent them from going into our water supply.  Water reclamation facilities are not designed to remove all of them and trace amounts of pharmaceuticals are showing up in our rivers and lakes around the world.

Bring

  • Prescription (controlled and non-controlled)
  • Over the Counter Medications
  • Ointments
  • Patches
  • Non-aerosol sprays
  • Inhalers
  • Creams
  • Vials
  • Pet Medications

Do Not Bring

  • Needles/Sharps
  • Liquids
  • Aerosol Cans
  • Bio-Hazardous Materials (anything containing a bodily fluid or blood)
  • Mercury Thermometers
  • Personal Care Products (Shampoo, Soap, Lotions, Sunscreen, etc.)
  • Household Hazardous Waste (Paint, Pesticides, Oil, Gas, etc.)

You can leave the medication in the original container, or if you are able, we prefer them to be removed from the original packaging and placed together in one package (Ziploc bag,  plastic container, etc.).  All the medication that is collected is disposed of properly so it does not end up in the wrong hands, land fill, water treatment plant, or waterways.

Thank you for your participation over the last few years, because of your dedicated efforts we have been able to keep over 500 pounds of unused prescription medications off the streets and out of landfills!
