How to Minimize Lead Exposure
If you have lead components in your water line, whether it be a gooseneck or internal plumbing, the following measures can help reduce exposure.
• Use only cold water for drinking, cooking and making baby formula.
• Regularly clean your faucet’s screen (also known as an aerator).
• Consider using a water filter certified to remove lead and know when it’s time to replace the filter.
• Flush your pipes before drinking by running the tap, taking a shower, doing laundry or a load of dishes. After periods of extended stagnation such as in the morning, run the water until it has turn cold, approximately one minute.
• Boiling water does NOT remove lead.
While these practices can reduce lead exposure the ultimate resolution is to replace lead components. If you have a galvanized or lead water service please inform the City at 608-637-7154 x19. The City of Viroqua has been awarded $200,000 from the WDNR to provide grants to homeowners to replace galvanized water services connected to lead goosenecks.
